The Left 4 Dead 2 Boycott Is Dead [Valve]

October 14th, 2009

Vocal Left 4 Dead 2 detractors and founders of the boycott against the game, Agent of Chaos and Walking_Dead, will be putting an end to the group established to protest the sequel as of next week. Why the concession?

"We have accomplished everything we can on our manifesto," wrote Agent of Chaos on the group's Steam Community space. "We've been dealing with Valve ever since our group started, then we met them in-person and now we're at the point of concluding our discussions. Our goal wasn't to steer people away from L4D2, it was to get Valve's attention and have them support original L4D. We succeeded and that's where our mission ends; nothing more or less."

The duo sound more like evangelists at this point, having personally met with Valve and shown what the future of Left 4 Dead holds. The two appear to finally be on board with this whole Left 4 Dead 2 thing.

"The boycott has served its purpose and it is now up to you all as individuals to decide what is right for you," writes boycott co-founder Walking_Dead in a follow up. "As a collective we have done more than achieve a few goals, we have paved the way for Developer-Community relations in the future. No matter what the press or other gamers say, we have made an indelible mark upon the future of this industry. You should all be proud, we certainly are."

It really warms the heart, doesn't it?

What do you think of the Achievement list for "Left 4 Dead 2"? Looking forward to messing with some clowns? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Left 4 Dead 2 Gets “Realism” Mode For Hardcore Zombie Killers [Valve]

October 8th, 2009

For players who find "expert" difficulty too easy in Left 4 Dead, it appears that Valve is upping the challenge for the sequel with "Realism" mode, a game modifier that made an unplanned appearance last night.

The folks at 1UP spotted the Realism modifier nestled away in one of the game's options, then squeezed Valve for details. According to marketing VP Doug Lombardi, Realism is designed for the Left 4 Dead 2 player more skilled, more masochistic than Valve's own testers.

How it's different, exactly, Lombardi wouldn't elaborate. But one might assume that Realism makes the infected in L4D2 act more like their real-world counterparts, requiring headshots to properly dispatch of the game's zombie hordes. That's just a guess, though.

Valve's other Left 4 Dead 2 reveal from last night's event, the "Scavenge" gameplay mode, can be read in more detail. With the game due out November 17th, expect Realism and the rest of the game's well-kept secrets to be revealed soon.

Left 4 Dead 2 Scavenge Mode Preview: Giving Multiplayer The Gas [Preview]

October 7th, 2009

Valve says the sole purpose of Left 4 Dead 2's new multiplayer mode, Scavenge, is to provide the game "quicker, even more frantic gameplay" than the versus mode has to offer.

That's hard to imagine given the blinding speed at which us games journalists tore through the normal versus mode while waiting for the developer to set up Scavenge matches. But two lightning-quick rounds a lot of incoherent howling later, the whole thing had gone by so fast that I almost didn't grasp what had happened. Luckily, I wrote it all down.

What Is It?
Scavenge is a new multiplayer mode in Left 4 Dead 2's lineup. It still pits four Survivors against a zombie horde dotted with special class Infected. But the catch is that the Survivors have to gather as many of 16 cans of gasoline throughout a map to fill up a generator while the zombies do their best to stop them, kill them or destroy the gas cans. The whole thing is timed and each gas can fed to the generator adds 20 seconds to the clock. The mode plays to three rounds with victory going to whoever got more cans total (and if there's a tie, it goes to who got the most in the least amount of time).

What We Saw
I played two matches of Scavenge on the Xbox 360 in a noisy club with a slew of other games journalists.

How Far Along Is It?
The game is out November 17.

What Needs Improvement?
It's WAY Too Easy to Generator-Camp: The map we were playing on had the all-important generator planted in the bottom of a drained pool at a motel. There was absolutely nothing to prevent an Infected from climbing into the pool and camping the generator so that the survivors couldn't successfully fill the generator (which takes about as much time as executing a heal or reviving a partner).

The Spitter Is All-Powerful: Gas cans are vulnerable to gunshots as you might assume they would be. However, they're especially vulnerable to the Spitter's saliva after they've been picked up. I don't mind that the Infected can rain on the Survivor's gas parade, of course, but I think it's not fair that the Spitter gets to have all the satisfaction of exploding a can of gas in a Survivor's arms with a well-aimed expectoration. Also, the Spitter can camp the generator without actually being there just by spitting in front of it to block a Survivor from getting close enough to pour the gas.

What Should Stay The Same?
Strategic Gas Can Placement: Aside from camp-vulnerable position the generator was in, the gas cans were spread out in a perfect way to challenge Survivors. Here and there, there would be clusters of three cans up on a roof you could throw down to waiting Survivors for a quick run back to the generator. But eventually, the cans come down to singletons spread out so far from each other you have to split up to get them in a timely fashion.

It's Fun And It's Frantic: I didn't think it was possible to speed up the experience of Left 4 Dead's versus mode – but there you have it. Scavenge goes by extremely fast (hence the three-round setup) and it's all the more fun for it. You're still getting all the weapons and desperate give-and-take of switching between Infected and Survivor factions that you would normally have. But at the same time, you're savoring it in an entirely different, gas-soaked way.

Final Thoughts
The katana is your best friend. I'm just saying.

‘Left 4 Dead 2′ Pre-Order Bonus Swings For the Fences

October 2nd, 2009

Valve is giving folks some extra love, so long as those folks are willing to plunk down some pre-order cash on Steam for "Left 4 Dead 2." Pre-ordering the game will net you early access to the "Left 4 Dead 2" demo (scheduled to release on October 27th) and 10% off the total price. But that's not all!

As an extra special bonus, an exclusive in-game weapon will be given to pre-orderers: a baseball bat. Valve is careful to specify "American baseball bat," which is odd since I didn't know that baseball bats varied all that much throughout the world, but hey, maybe in Tibet they use like a triangle? The bat is one of 10 new melee weapons introduced in the game.

Cool bonus, but I wonder how it'll be introduced into the game. Will it only pop up in games hosted by pre-orderers, and can non-pre-orderers (yes, it's a word. look it up.) pick it up in one such game? Either way, if you're planning on picking up "Left 4 Dead 2" on the PC, there's really no excuse to not take advantage of the deal. Unless you're planning on pirating it, of course. If so, Valve would very much like to know where you live.

Left 4 Dead 2 Demo Details Clarified

September 25th, 2009
Valve has cleared up one of the two mysteries surrounding the Left 4 Dead 2 demo announcement, confirming to Shacknews that the demo will be exclusive to both Steam and Xbox 360 pre-order customers on October 27.

The company did not clarify if the later public demo will be released the following week on November 3, as some retailers are reporting. We'll report back when we find out. Tags: demo, Left 4 Dead 2, PC, steam, Xbox 360

LEFT 4 DEAD CRASH COURSE AVAILABLE SEPT 29

September 23rd, 2009
September 23, 2009 - Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress, and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced that Crash Course -- the second downloadable content (DLC) update for its co-operative zombie thriller, Left 4 Dead (L4D) -- will be made available worldwide on September 29 on Xbox 360 and PC.

Crash Course delivers new single-player, multiplayer and co-operative gameplay to both platforms, and bridges the gap between the end of the "No Mercy" campaign and the beginning of "Death Toll" in the original game.

While containing both Survival maps and a Co-operative Campaign, the primary goal of Crash Course is to deliver a complete Versus mode experience in just 30 minutes, resulting in a streamlined version of the game's existing Versus campaigns. A recharge timer for infected teammates has also been added, and item spawn behavior has changed for more balanced gameplay.

Left 4 Dead is an action horror game from Valve that blends the social entertainment experience of multiplayer games such as Counter-Strike and Team Fortress with the dramatic, narrative experience made popular in single player action game classics such as the Half-Life series of games. Released in November of 2008, L4D has earned over 50 industry awards from outlets around the world and sold almost 3 million copies worldwide.

Left 4 Dead 2 Exclusive Offers In-Game Baseball Bat

August 31st, 2009

New details on Left 4 Dead 2 pre-orders are coming to life, like this one from Game.co.uk, where early buyers will gain access to the demo AND a download code for what’s reported to be an “exclusive in-game weapon: a baseball bat.” I fully expect to see other retailers following suit with bonus items, but EXCLUSIVE? They’re really going to ration out items to those who buy from certain stores? Seems very un-Valvelike.

UPDATE: According to Valve, the way it works is that if one person has the exclusive items, all people in-game also can use them. No word yet on whether this is a timed exclusive or not.

Valve Interview Sheds More Light on Left 4 Dead 2

August 30th, 2009

There’s a great interview with Valve writer, Chet Faliszek, at Offworld about Left 4 Dead and Valve culture in general. Very interesting conversation about the larger Left 4 Dead world, which has some surprises in store for us.

Interestingly, Faliszek mentions that the recently announced L4D1 DLC, Crash Course, was supposed to be released before E3 and the Left 4 Dead 2 announcement.

“I think in this case we just didn’t message correctly,” said Faliszek to Offworld. “We didn’t make it clear that Left 4 Dead was still going to be updated. We just didn’t think to mention it, we were focusing on other stuff.” “We, internally, always knew we were going to do cool new stuff, so we didn’t say anything about the original game,” he added. “Of course we also intended to get the Crash Course DLC for L4D out before E3, but some things held us up.” “I think if we had that out before the Left 4 Dead 2 announcement, then it would have been clearer for our intentions. Losing the opportunity to get that right hurt us, but I think we made the right choices otherwise.”

While I really enjoy what Valve is doing here, I’m not entirely convinced this is true. It all seems like damage control. From the outside looking in, Crash Course seems to be a short Left 4 Dead experience, one easily concocted between E3 and its September release. I’m hoping I’m wrong!
