Shack News got some hands-on time with the new "Scavenge" mode in Left 4 Dead 2. In this timed mode, there are gas cans scattered around the level. The survivors have to collect them and bring them back to a generator. The infected players try to stop them, of course.A total of 16 gas cans appear every round--the goal is to use as many of those cans as possible within the time limit. Each round kicks off with a ticking 120 second timer, and every gas can used adds another 20 seconds to the clock.
As the canisters are a limited commodity, survivors have to be careful that they don't shoot them or otherwise cause them to explode. And they'll also have to watch out for the other team too, as enemies can detonate the canisters at points. A friend of mine who works at Valve says this mode is perfect for shorter bouts of gameplay and, ironically, longer sessions overall because your playing time is broken into smaller slices.
He further points out that the special infected creatures play into this mode's unique balance. For instance, the new spitter can destroy gas cans only after the survivors have picked them up and dropped them. Which means a survivor probably is going to hold his can tightly until he gets back to the generator. And that's were smokers, hunters, and the other new types of infected come into play. Oh dear, you have a thirty-foot tongue wrapped around you, so you've just dropped a can of highly flammable material at your feet. That can't be good.
It sounds to me like Left 4 Dead 2 has captured the essence of capture-the-flag and distilled it into short, intense, incendiary bursts of gameplay.
