What if competitive sports were added to Left 4 Dead?

May 17th, 2010

A video series called Mutation Vault suggests some new extreme sports played in the world of Left 4 Dead 2. Start off with the Ultimate Boomer Vomit Tourney, then wager on a little Jockey Racing, and finally brave the Running of the Tanks (above), which makes Pamplona look like a well behaved conga line.

Adding to the atmosphere are the distorted mic calls of "Stop spawning more!", "Adrenaline and then run!", and various variations of "Oh my god!", including several with unsavory language. However, my favorite would have to be the following matter-of-fact observation: "That is a tank horde right behind us."

See how Left 4 Dead 2 looks in Australian

November 3rd, 2009

Left 4 Dead 2 had a tough time of it with the Australian ratings board. So Valve made a toned down version down under. Have a look at the side-by-side comparisons to see what the Aussies are missing.

On the bright side, Australia still gets to enjoy all the scenery from those Lord of the Rings movies. It must be great to be able to see Mt. Doom from the capital city of Sidney. I'd much rather have that than several hundred zombie dismemberments*.

* Not really.

Left 4 Dead 2 goes to the mall

Left 4 Dead 2 goes to the mall

One of the advantages of being bilingual is that when a website from another country breaks a story, you can break it to us folks who only speak English. Hence this blog's reveal of the two unannounced campaigns in Left 4 Dead 2, passed along from a Taiwanese web site.

The latest campaign to be unmasked is Dead Center, which takes place in none other than a shopping mall and bearing the tagline "Prices Aren't The Only Things Getting Slashed." It was only a matter of time before the game paid tribute to the mall in Dawn of the Dead.

The fifth and final campaign, entitled "Hard Rain", with carries the subtitle "Come Hell and High Water" appears to take place in a flooded industrial complex of some sort, a rainy setting that will undoubtedly evoke scenes of the Hurricane Katrina disaster for many.

Left 4 Dead 2 asks, "Got fuel?"

Left 4 Dead 2 asks,

Shack News got some hands-on time with the new "Scavenge" mode in Left 4 Dead 2. In this timed mode, there are gas cans scattered around the level. The survivors have to collect them and bring them back to a generator. The infected players try to stop them, of course.

A total of 16 gas cans appear every round--the goal is to use as many of those cans as possible within the time limit. Each round kicks off with a ticking 120 second timer, and every gas can used adds another 20 seconds to the clock.

As the canisters are a limited commodity, survivors have to be careful that they don't shoot them or otherwise cause them to explode. And they'll also have to watch out for the other team too, as enemies can detonate the canisters at points. A friend of mine who works at Valve says this mode is perfect for shorter bouts of gameplay and, ironically, longer sessions overall because your playing time is broken into smaller slices.

He further points out that the special infected creatures play into this mode's unique balance. For instance, the new spitter can destroy gas cans only after the survivors have picked them up and dropped them. Which means a survivor probably is going to hold his can tightly until he gets back to the generator. And that's were smokers, hunters, and the other new types of infected come into play. Oh dear, you have a thirty-foot tongue wrapped around you, so you've just dropped a can of highly flammable material at your feet. That can't be good.

It sounds to me like Left 4 Dead 2 has captured the essence of capture-the-flag and distilled it into short, intense, incendiary bursts of gameplay.
