[Update] Left 4 Dead 2 Demo Doesn’t Name Upcoming DLC [Rumor]

October 30th, 2009

PC gamers dissecting the Left 4 Dead 2 demo found files that might reference the names of future DLC packs, CVG reports. [Update] Valve's Chet Faliszek shot down this rumor. They were spaceholder test file names.

Original story follows:

"Miracle Pack" and "Apocalyptic Pack" are both mentioned in the demo files. The original L4D survivors also are mentioned in the files. CVG speculates they might be made available at some time in the sequel.

News of Xbox Live avatar awards were also discovered by the same inspection of gamefiles.

I've emailed Valve to see if they want to take a swing at it. If so, it'll be updated here.

‘Left 4 Dead 2′ DLC Named In PC Demo?

October 30th, 2009

Left 4 Dead 2

"Left 4 Dead 2" Avatar Awards clues may not have been alone when they were buried in the code for the game's new demo. Message board posters once again appear to have plowed deep into the demo's .txt files and unearthed some unannounced names -- the "Miracle Pack" and "Apocalyptic Pack."

"Seems people have been digging through the 'L4D2' files, heres some of what they found," user Cordl3ssPen posted on Rage3D.

The titles reportedly appear with error messages under the heading "DLC strings," indicating that a player has done something in-game that requires DLC.

"Please, download Miracle Pack content from Xbox LIVE Marketplace," the prompt reads, followed by another key phrase. "Would you like to download Survival Pack 1 content from Xbox LIVE Marketplace now?"

The Apocalyptic Pack, meanwhile, names names its content explicitly, asking, "Would you like to download Apocalyptic Pack content from Xbox LIVE Marketplace now?"

So it sounds like there are at least two DLC packs in the works for "Left 4 Dead," even if they aren't official yet. And it should be cautiously noted that until they're official, anything is possible. But the code rakers have proven themselves resourceful once again.

Have you taken a look at the "Left 4 Dead 2" demo yet? Seen anything that we haven't noted? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

‘Left 4 Dead 2′ Intro Video Leaked, Is Awesome

October 22nd, 2009

Left 4 Dead 2

The intro video for the original "Left 4 Dead" was one of the best pre-rendered cutscenes I've ever seen. It so perfectly captured the spirit of the game (killing zombies), effective tactics against the special zombies, and the personalities of the four survivors. It was funny, intense and visually excellent.

Valve's high standards have apparently continued on through to "Left 4 Dead 2," as seen in the leaked intro video for that game:

The Left 4 Dead 2 Boycott Is Dead [Valve]

October 14th, 2009

Vocal Left 4 Dead 2 detractors and founders of the boycott against the game, Agent of Chaos and Walking_Dead, will be putting an end to the group established to protest the sequel as of next week. Why the concession?

"We have accomplished everything we can on our manifesto," wrote Agent of Chaos on the group's Steam Community space. "We've been dealing with Valve ever since our group started, then we met them in-person and now we're at the point of concluding our discussions. Our goal wasn't to steer people away from L4D2, it was to get Valve's attention and have them support original L4D. We succeeded and that's where our mission ends; nothing more or less."

The duo sound more like evangelists at this point, having personally met with Valve and shown what the future of Left 4 Dead holds. The two appear to finally be on board with this whole Left 4 Dead 2 thing.

"The boycott has served its purpose and it is now up to you all as individuals to decide what is right for you," writes boycott co-founder Walking_Dead in a follow up. "As a collective we have done more than achieve a few goals, we have paved the way for Developer-Community relations in the future. No matter what the press or other gamers say, we have made an indelible mark upon the future of this industry. You should all be proud, we certainly are."

It really warms the heart, doesn't it?

‘Dead Center’ and ‘Hard Rain’ are final Left 4 Dead 2 campaigns [Update: They're real!]

October 11th, 2009

Update: A Valve representative has confirmed the veracity of the two posters as official, saying simply, "They're legit."

Original: It is with much necessary reservation that we bring you the two purported Left 4 Dead 2 campaign posters for "Dead Center" and "Hard Rain" that you see above, completing the set of five campaign missions. Found over on Taiwanese website GNN, we're highly skeptical of their veracity for the time being, but felt their quality at least bared mention -- if this isn't real thing, it's damn impressive. Being Danny Doubters though, we're still a bit thrown by consistency differences when compared to the game's other three posters. We've sent a note to Valve for comment, so until we hear back, the images will remain strictly in our "unconfirmed" pile.

In the meantime, ponder this: "Dead Center" translated by Google from Mandarin Chinese is "Death Marketplace." Fact!

[Thanks Lockwolf!]

“Dead Before Dawn” Mod Guaranteed to Hit on Halloween [Mods]

October 11th, 2009

News to some, friendly reminder to others, but the Left 4 Dead mod "Dead Before Dawn," a mall-based homage to "Dawn of the Dead," is no ordinary mod. Valve sent the makers a soundfile of Francis saying "I hate malls."

Anyway, "Dead Before Dawn" hits on Oct. 31. The modmakers are working feverishly, and promise that they will put something out on Halloween.

In the event that we do not see our finale up to scratch for release, we will NOT postpone the release. We promised you a halloween release date, a halloween release date is what your going to get. If this does happen, maps 1 - 5 will be released and an update for the campaign containing the finale will be released shortly after.

Further, yes, that is a fifth character in the poster; yes, he is C.J. head of Crossroads Mall security, and yes, he is playable.

You can see tons more screens at the link. It seriously looks like one hell of a great mod.

Left 4 Dead PC patch reclosing doors in ‘Crash Course’ DLC [update]

October 11th, 2009

Aside from fixing pressing issues like "campaign image not updating correctly when creating a lobby" and increasing "the reliability of the Steam Group server display," Valve's recently released PC patch updates a crucial issue with Left 4 Dead's latest DLC: keeping doors closed. Apparently, during Versus mode in the game's "Crash Course" DLC, players were able to release teammates from "rescue closets," assuredly stopping rampant R. Kelly syndrome. The game may be fixed, but will that cure your urge to micturate on people? Only time will tell.

Left 4 Dead Map Recreates Zombie Film Fest Theater For Zombie Film Fest [Mods]

October 9th, 2009

Skilled modder "ZapWizard" is going above and beyond for a project tied to the "Dismember the Alamo" zombie film festival ambling to Alamo Draft House later this month. He's recreated the theater in great detail in Left 4 Dead.

What's more, Mr. Wizard is aiming to have the Alamo Draft House-gone-horribly-wrong playable at said film fest, complete with arcade-style cabinets. The recreation of the famed cinema chain is impressive, with recreations of each theater room in various states of destruction, custom-made posters and stills from zombie flicks projected on each theater's silver screen.

Take a minute to eyeball the work in progress Left 4 Dead map at the forum conversation below, take note of the detail and hope for its swift availability for download following the film fest.

Left 4 Dead 2 Gets “Realism” Mode For Hardcore Zombie Killers [Valve]

October 8th, 2009

For players who find "expert" difficulty too easy in Left 4 Dead, it appears that Valve is upping the challenge for the sequel with "Realism" mode, a game modifier that made an unplanned appearance last night.

The folks at 1UP spotted the Realism modifier nestled away in one of the game's options, then squeezed Valve for details. According to marketing VP Doug Lombardi, Realism is designed for the Left 4 Dead 2 player more skilled, more masochistic than Valve's own testers.

How it's different, exactly, Lombardi wouldn't elaborate. But one might assume that Realism makes the infected in L4D2 act more like their real-world counterparts, requiring headshots to properly dispatch of the game's zombie hordes. That's just a guess, though.

Valve's other Left 4 Dead 2 reveal from last night's event, the "Scavenge" gameplay mode, can be read in more detail. With the game due out November 17th, expect Realism and the rest of the game's well-kept secrets to be revealed soon.
