‘Wizard Of Oz’ Meets ‘Left 4 Dead’

April 14th, 2010

Wizard of Oz Left 4 Dead

Can't say this mash-up ever occurred to me, though, in hindsight, it seems sort of obvious. Four people from four different backgrounds trying to conquer a gauntlet to ensure their future survival. Whether they're up against flying monkeys or zombies, the challenge before them is still epic.

The image above was created for the "Character of the Week" contest on Concept Art and was collected by Super Punch in a much more viewable format. Hardly any of the "Oz" re-imaginings are video game related, but they're all extremely impressive and make me upset that the recent SyFy re-imagining was so terrible.

Here's the full shot of the poster, which really sells the "Left 4 Oz" motif.

‘Left 4 Dead’ DLC Spoilers Bring Out The Dead

March 22nd, 2010

Left 4 Dead 2

On the non-spoilery side of some new "Left 4 Dead" reveals, the upcoming "Left 4 Dead 2" DLC episode "Nobody Survives Forever" will directly relate to some upcoming "L4D1" DLC, and a comic book with bridge both stories. On the significantly more spoilery side of "NSF," however, you'll have to click on past the jump where I've placed the rest of the info, just in case some readers don't want to know about it.

"You'll run into 'Left 4 Dead 1' characters after they've just had this happen," Valve writer Chet Faliszek told GameTrailers TV. "After this we'll release 'Left 4 Dead 1' DLC, in which one of you will have to do what happens, and one of you will die."

Faliszek didn't name the fated party member, but he did say that the story between the unreleased DLC releases will be laid out in comic book form -- though it won't factor in choices and alternatives that show up in-game.

"And we'll actually have a comic book coming out between the two," he said. "It explains the idealized version of how it works out."

It sounds like you may have be able to choose who bites the bullet in the end, but should you choose to by the DLC, you'll be able to find out for yourself.

Do you like the linked DLC strategy for "L4D2" and "L4D1" that Valve is planning? Would you rather they stuck to 2? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Motion Controlled Left 4 Dead 2 in Action [Clips]

January 9th, 2010

Yesterday Mike wrote up his impressions of a motion-control enabled version of Left 4 Dead 2 running on a PC with the help of Sixense TrueMotion wireless motion controllers.

Now take a gander at a Razer rep playing a bit of the game with the dual, black sticks.

Left 4 Dead 2′s Frying Pans Kill a Tank 3 Times Faster than Shotguns [Charts]

January 3rd, 2010

Granted, this chart assumes the Tank is just standing there taking the abuse. Still, a Steam user found that 10 frying pan hits kill a Tank in nine seconds, compared to 30 blasts from a combat shotgun in 26 seconds.

The forum user, Urik, found that It's not just the frying pan, any melee weapon is a 10-hit kill on a Tank, expert difficulty. You can go all honky-tonk man on him with 10 whacks from the git-tar if you like, which sounds even more absurd (and less durable) than the cookware. I've never done this, probably would never try to do it except as a last resort. I'm betting Tanky-poo, in actuality, makes it take longer than 9 seconds, though.

Left 4 Dead 2 PC Patched Up Real Good, Xbox 360 Update “Later This Month” [Valve]

December 10th, 2009

Valve has put forth a new update for the PC version of Left 4 Dead 2, fixing up a long list of outstanding bugs, tweaking gameplay and much much more. Expect the same fixes "later this month," Xbox 360 players.

Most of the changes appear to be relatively small, somewhat reducing the effectiveness of the Spitter in some circumstances, but not by much. A less specific updating of Special Infected hit boxes is also included, but how they were updated, we're not yet sure.

Update: Yes, we are sure. This Steam forum thread illustrates the differences between the old and new hit boxes for the Charger, Jockey and Spitter.

Here's the full list of changes.

  • Changed rules for ghost placement in Scavenge Mode
  • Player controlled Special Infected are no longer forced to un-crouch and lock strafe when they crouch attack
  • Spitter spit that damages players on a moving elevator will now fizzle quickly
  • Allow the survivor and infected to rotate the camera yaw while being attacked by a Charger or Smoker
  • Smoker that has dragged a survivor to the end now gets the same cinematic flashlight as the Hunter and Charger
  • Fixed a crash in physics
  • Updated the Charger's hit boxes
  • Updated the Jockey's hit boxes
  • Updated the Spitter's hit boxes
  • Fixed player health on being revived after a Charger slam over a high ledge
  • Fixed versus scores not resetting after a vote to change campaigns
  • Fixed being able to use defibrillator on dead players who were far above or below you
  • Fixed pink glow on dead survivors
  • Fixed being able to hold crouch while incapped to get better weapon accuracy
  • Fixed players pushing against some props causing them to accumulate downward velocity and then take falling damage when they let go of the forward key
  • Fixed a case where an incapped survivor inside a rescue vehicle would trigger both the escape sequence and a round restart
  • Fixed the helping hand from getting stuck when extended

Get Ready for Even Freakier L4D2 Mods [Mods]

December 7th, 2009

The delayed SDK for Left 4 Dead 2 has been a bummer to that robust modding community, but now they have news that softens their disappointment: When it arrives, the kit will support custom survivors, infected, weapons, you name it.

L4DMods.com says it got a look at code detailing what can be expected in the release. Let's let them explain\:

Custom models are now supported and very much a reality now! And that includes survivors, special infected, common infected and weapons. Not only that, it seems the weapon functionality can also be edited. So what does this all mean? Well it means mappers can have custom survivors, special/common infected and entirely new weapons unique to just their campaigns (i.e map side modifications, NOT server side)! The L4D modding scene just got a little more interesting boys and girls.

What does this mean to you, the Left 4 Dead 2 PC player? Well, a whole lot more than just Nude Zoeys, I'd bet. Maybe nude jockey-Zoeys hybrids? It's a start.

Sixteen-Player Co-Op Lets Survivors Outnumber Infected in L4D2 [Whoa]

November 23rd, 2009

Someone has figured out a way to host 16-player co-op in Left 4 Dead 2 on the PC, and as this video shows, it is pure mayhem, with survivors outnumbering infected during some parts of the game.

Plus, I mean, god damn, look how long it takes for everyone to get in the safe room.

Here's another video. I love the beginning, everyone running one after the other to the weapons table. As awesome as this looks, I bet it's pure hell to play. We're seeing the reason Valve capped this at four to a side, I think.

Sadly, Jimmy Gibbs Jr. Did Not Survive The Zombie Apocalypse [PC]

November 18th, 2009

Those already knee-deep in Left 4 Dead 2's Southern undead will be familiar with Jimmy Gibbs Jr, who is only the greatest stock car racer of all time. Or shall we say, was.

Enterprising modder samm5506 was digging around in Left 4 Dead 2's code the other day when he stumbled upon a zombie model not found within the game itself. Dropping it into a level, he found it was none other than Mr. Jimmy Gibbs Jr. himself, who aside from being a particularly tough zombie, also brings out a few custom one-liners from the survivors, like Nick's "God damn that Jimmy Gibbs Jr.!".

To drop Gibbs into a game (PC version only, naturally), enable the console, then from the main menu enter these commands:

map atrium
sv_cheats 1
z_forcezombiemodelname common_male_jimmy
z_forcezombiemodel 1

Then have at him. The fact he's dead - and trying to bite your face off - makes stealing his car totally OK.

Play Versus Mode In The Left 4 Dead 2 Demo [Left 4 Dead]

November 4th, 2009

The Left 4 Dead 2 demo is now out there for public consumption, but users will have found that the game's signature versus mode has been locked. No problem. Just hack your way around it!

Modder Saul has whipped up a little plugin that allows you to play as the zombies in an online match (PC version only, of course). If you want to host a game, you download the plugin, if you just want to join a game, all you need to do is enter some commands in the console and you're good to go.

Interested? Full details at the link below.
