Left 4 Dead 2 goes free-to-play on Xbox Live next weekend

January 10th, 2010
If you've been sitting around on your hands waiting for the next free opportunity to play Left 4 Dead 2 on Xbox Live with your friends, well, we think you're a bit strange and should likely find a better habit. That being said, you'll be happy to hear that the game will be free-to-play for all Xbox Live members (even you lower class Silver folks) next weekend, starting promptly at 12:00PM ET on Friday, January 15, and finishing up on Monday the 18th (also at noon, as confirmed to CVG by Microsoft). We can't imagine that those of you still holding out will be convinced of an Xbox Live Gold account's worth after just one weekend, but it certainly can't hurt, now can it?

Update: The free weekend has been confirmed for Europe only. A Microsoft representative tells Joystiq the company has "nothing to announce at this time" about a North American promotion. When asked if they had a timetable to announce something, the representative politely said that we'll hear something soon one way or another.

Left 4 Dead 2′s Frying Pans Kill a Tank 3 Times Faster than Shotguns [Charts]

January 3rd, 2010

Granted, this chart assumes the Tank is just standing there taking the abuse. Still, a Steam user found that 10 frying pan hits kill a Tank in nine seconds, compared to 30 blasts from a combat shotgun in 26 seconds.

The forum user, Urik, found that It's not just the frying pan, any melee weapon is a 10-hit kill on a Tank, expert difficulty. You can go all honky-tonk man on him with 10 whacks from the git-tar if you like, which sounds even more absurd (and less durable) than the cookware. I've never done this, probably would never try to do it except as a last resort. I'm betting Tanky-poo, in actuality, makes it take longer than 9 seconds, though.

Mod adds Travis Touchdown to Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead

December 7th, 2009

No More Heroes' girl-crazy otaku protagonist, Travis Touchdown, must have found the Cosmic Key, because he's crossed over into the world of Valve games -- specifically Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress 2.

The L4D mod uses Travis to meet the game's quota for one leather-clad survivor, putting him, in his usual red jacket and Pure White Lover Bizarre Jelly T-shirt (but no beam katana), in the place of ultra-pessimist Francis. While an L4D2 mod could address the lack of stabbing and cutting, it would seem mod creator ash_link isn't a fan of Valve's sequel, so, yeah ... that's probably not happening.

The Team Fortress 2 mod does about the same thing, replacing that game's Scout with a pint-sized, katana-wielding Touchdown. Head past the break to see for yourself. Seriously, go watch the video now.

Sixteen-Player Co-Op Lets Survivors Outnumber Infected in L4D2 [Whoa]

November 23rd, 2009

Someone has figured out a way to host 16-player co-op in Left 4 Dead 2 on the PC, and as this video shows, it is pure mayhem, with survivors outnumbering infected during some parts of the game.

Plus, I mean, god damn, look how long it takes for everyone to get in the safe room.

Here's another video. I love the beginning, everyone running one after the other to the weapons table. As awesome as this looks, I bet it's pure hell to play. We're seeing the reason Valve capped this at four to a side, I think.

Valve Brings ‘L4D2′ And ‘Team Fortress 2′ To Holiday Greeting Cards

November 23rd, 2009

Valve Holiday Cards

Anyone having trouble deciding on a holiday greeting card to send out to their Xbox Live friend list this season should an easier search thanks to Valve expansion into the stationary market. "Left 4 Dead," "Left 4 Dead 2" and "Team Fortress 2" each have their own set available, featuring artwork by Alexandria Neonakis.

The cards run $15.95 for a pack of 10 with envelopes and are available through The Valve Store.

If Neonakis' name sounds familiar, it's probably because you've seen her home-grown creations in the past, which have included "Katamari Damacy" and "World of Warcraft" cards posted on her website. Valve seems to have recognized her talent and employed her thusly.

Images on the notes range from zombies adorned in Christmas tree lights to snipers dressed like snowmen, but all of them have Neonakis' signature feel of classic illustration with a touch of fannish appreciation. They're pretty much exactly what you'd want to send to any online friends that you primarily associate with over Steam or XBL.

According to the site, pre-orders entered now should ship at the end of November, so move quickly if you want to receive them in time to fill out and distribute for December.

What do you think of Valve's new line of holiday greeting cards? Which games would you like to see get a similar treatment? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Left 4 Dead 2 clothing is surprisingly unprotective

November 11th, 2009
Honestly, you'd think licensed Left 4 Dead 2 clothing would provide at least some semblance of undead protection. Alas, it looks like the best that Glitch Gaming Apparel could provide is simple T-shirts. Sure, the 100 percent cotton shirts provide ample breathability, but they provide next to zero zombie bite protection. Even worse, they're short-sleeved, leaving hapless survivors with plump, juicy and completely visible arms.

Still, the Ellis and Coach tees at least have a picture of a medical kit on the back, which might be enough to fool a zombie into thinking you're prepared. Let's hope that buys enough time to find yourself a Molotov.

Valve: Left 4 Dead 2 Pre-orders 4 Times The 1st [Valve]

November 5th, 2009

Despite the boycotts, despite the un-Valve-like speedy turn around time, despite complaints that Left 4 Dead 2's cast of Survivors can't possibly live up to the first, pre-orders are four times that of the original, says Valve.

The developer tells CVG that perception about the sequel seems to have changed since the original E3 2009 announcement. "I think people are just excited now," Valve's Chet Faliszek says, citing response to the recently released demo and pre-order numbers.

Oh, indeed, Chet. I may not have coughed up the necessary bills to secure an exclusive American baseball bat or Bill's interdimensional hat, but I'm excited. Where is that UPS man, anyway?

Of course, Left 4 Dead 2 has the benefit of being a known entity, instead of a newly launched intellectual property like the first. We do love our sequels, Valve.

The Left 4 Dead 2 demo is now out there for public consumption, but users will have found that the game's signature versus mode has been locked. No problem. Just hack your way around it!

L4D mod ‘Dead Before Dawn’ recreates Dawn of the Dead remake

November 3rd, 2009
The Left 4 Dead modding community is really kicking decomposing zombie butt lately. We've seen Raccoon City, some of our favorite Super Mario 64 spots, and even Shaun of the Dead's Winchester pub all realized in the game's zombie apocalypse framework. Now we bring you another mod that pays homage to a zombie film: 'Dead Before Dawn,' a mod based on the 2004 remake of George A. Romero's classic, Dawn of the Dead.

The new mod opened to public beta this Halloween and features a variety of locales stripped from the movie, along with its own snazzy campaign poster. The folks behind the mod even went so far as to create their own title sequence (though their version features far less Johnny Cash than the movie's). You can shamble on past the break to check it out.

[Thanks, Gutfree!]
