[Update] Left 4 Dead 2 Demo Doesn’t Name Upcoming DLC [Rumor]

October 30th, 2009

PC gamers dissecting the Left 4 Dead 2 demo found files that might reference the names of future DLC packs, CVG reports. [Update] Valve's Chet Faliszek shot down this rumor. They were spaceholder test file names.

Original story follows:

"Miracle Pack" and "Apocalyptic Pack" are both mentioned in the demo files. The original L4D survivors also are mentioned in the files. CVG speculates they might be made available at some time in the sequel.

News of Xbox Live avatar awards were also discovered by the same inspection of gamefiles.

I've emailed Valve to see if they want to take a swing at it. If so, it'll be updated here.

‘Left 4 Dead 2′ DLC Named In PC Demo?

October 30th, 2009

Left 4 Dead 2

"Left 4 Dead 2" Avatar Awards clues may not have been alone when they were buried in the code for the game's new demo. Message board posters once again appear to have plowed deep into the demo's .txt files and unearthed some unannounced names -- the "Miracle Pack" and "Apocalyptic Pack."

"Seems people have been digging through the 'L4D2' files, heres some of what they found," user Cordl3ssPen posted on Rage3D.

The titles reportedly appear with error messages under the heading "DLC strings," indicating that a player has done something in-game that requires DLC.

"Please, download Miracle Pack content from Xbox LIVE Marketplace," the prompt reads, followed by another key phrase. "Would you like to download Survival Pack 1 content from Xbox LIVE Marketplace now?"

The Apocalyptic Pack, meanwhile, names names its content explicitly, asking, "Would you like to download Apocalyptic Pack content from Xbox LIVE Marketplace now?"

So it sounds like there are at least two DLC packs in the works for "Left 4 Dead," even if they aren't official yet. And it should be cautiously noted that until they're official, anything is possible. But the code rakers have proven themselves resourceful once again.

Have you taken a look at the "Left 4 Dead 2" demo yet? Seen anything that we haven't noted? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Video: Left 4 Dead 2′s Realism Mode

October 29th, 2009
When we first heard that Left 4 Dead 2 would feature a "Realism Mode," our first reaction was to hide in the closet, swaddled in the comfort of old coats and dust bunnies. Left 4 Dead wasn't exactly an easy game to begin with, so hearing that there would be an even more realistic, more punishing difficulty mode was a bit difficult to swallow. Now, G4TV has been kind enough to assemble a brief walkthrough of one level played in Realism Mode and ... it really doesn't look all that bad.

X-Play's Abbie Heppe explains there are a few major differences. One, dead players will stay dead unless revived with a defibrillator -- keep in mind that each player can carry a defibrillator or a med kit, not both. Second, zombies must be killed with headshots, though it's hard to tell how strict this rule is in the video. Third, players have to be much closer to items in order to pick them up. Finally, there are many, many more witches. See it for yourself after the break.

UK Viral Vid Teaches Us How to Cope with L4D2 [Left 4 Dead]

October 28th, 2009

Bad enough that this sucker's set in Louisiana and still features a cricket bat - I've truly never heard of anyone playing that game south of the Mason-Dixon, outside of university graduate students from India.

This viral vid across the pond for Left 4 Dead 2 furthers the European co-opting of the zombie genre - as American as the Fourth of July, apple pie and loud mufflers - by applying all sorts of Euro words to zombie-fightin' weaponry. You don't have a chainsaw but you do have a what? "A ... 'strimmer'"?

The hell is a "strimmer"?

Looky here, beefeater. My great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great granddaddy kicked your great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great granddaddy's ass back in 1812, and then my granddaddy, forgiving all of that, bailed y'all out in the big Dubya-Dubya-Eye-Eye, so that I would grow up in a world where I had the inalienable right to call that goddamn yard tool by its proper generic name - "weedwhacker."

Left 4 Dead 2 commercial hits a home run … for GameStop

October 26th, 2009
Okay, we won't deny it -- the first TV spot for Left 4 Dead 2 is pretty cool. After all, it's got the four survivor characters in a baseball stadium filled with the infected undead, one of which gets knocked into the bleachers (or at least a few feet through the air) by a baseball bat. But as much as it's an advertisement for the game, it's also one for GameStop, driving home the fact that the American baseball bat is available only through pre-order at the retailer. Good for them!

It's a bit of a downer, though, for those who've reserved the game elsewhere. Or what about the people who just walk into a store on release day to snap up a copy? We've got it! The next ad should feature the survivors being ripped apart by zombies, with the tagline "Pre-order or Die!" We mean, a company's eventually going to go there someday, right?

‘Left 4 Dead 2′ Intro Video Leaked, Is Awesome

October 22nd, 2009

Left 4 Dead 2

The intro video for the original "Left 4 Dead" was one of the best pre-rendered cutscenes I've ever seen. It so perfectly captured the spirit of the game (killing zombies), effective tactics against the special zombies, and the personalities of the four survivors. It was funny, intense and visually excellent.

Valve's high standards have apparently continued on through to "Left 4 Dead 2," as seen in the leaked intro video for that game:

The Left 4 Dead 2 Boycott Is Dead [Valve]

October 14th, 2009

Vocal Left 4 Dead 2 detractors and founders of the boycott against the game, Agent of Chaos and Walking_Dead, will be putting an end to the group established to protest the sequel as of next week. Why the concession?

"We have accomplished everything we can on our manifesto," wrote Agent of Chaos on the group's Steam Community space. "We've been dealing with Valve ever since our group started, then we met them in-person and now we're at the point of concluding our discussions. Our goal wasn't to steer people away from L4D2, it was to get Valve's attention and have them support original L4D. We succeeded and that's where our mission ends; nothing more or less."

The duo sound more like evangelists at this point, having personally met with Valve and shown what the future of Left 4 Dead holds. The two appear to finally be on board with this whole Left 4 Dead 2 thing.

"The boycott has served its purpose and it is now up to you all as individuals to decide what is right for you," writes boycott co-founder Walking_Dead in a follow up. "As a collective we have done more than achieve a few goals, we have paved the way for Developer-Community relations in the future. No matter what the press or other gamers say, we have made an indelible mark upon the future of this industry. You should all be proud, we certainly are."

It really warms the heart, doesn't it?

Newell, in Australia, on ‘Entertainment as a Service’ [Valve]

October 13th, 2009

In this video, the Valve boss Gabe Newell takes questions at the Park Hyatt Hotel in Sydney and discusses support for Left 4 Dead and why he honored the deal to fly to Australia to see a modder's campaign

Newell was asked about support for Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2, relative to other Valve titles, and the chief offered that "Team Fortress is the benchmark and that's the level we intend to bring all products to.

We're going through transition, which I think is interesting. We call it "entertainment as a service" and Team Fortress is furthest along, in terms of rapid regular updates, and moving into movies with the 'Meet the Team' shorts, as well as we're starting to do some stuff with comics. So, Team Fortress is really the model that the rest of our products are gonna be following as we move ahead.

As to why he honored modder Joe W-A's request to get down to Brisbane and see his Left 4 Dead campaign:

We recognize that we really are part of this community. We talk about it a lot, that we're not up here and the community's down here, and the games snowflake in. We really are part of it. We look to that community to see what we should do. ... It was pretty clear that this was one of those things that the community fell in love with the idea. They wanted us to come down here and meet with Joe and give him feedback. And in our experience, it's been very bad idea when we get such a clear signal from pc gaming community, if we ignore it.

What do you think of the Achievement list for "Left 4 Dead 2"? Looking forward to messing with some clowns? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.
