Get Ready for Even Freakier L4D2 Mods [Mods]

December 7th, 2009

The delayed SDK for Left 4 Dead 2 has been a bummer to that robust modding community, but now they have news that softens their disappointment: When it arrives, the kit will support custom survivors, infected, weapons, you name it.

L4DMods.com says it got a look at code detailing what can be expected in the release. Let's let them explain\:

Custom models are now supported and very much a reality now! And that includes survivors, special infected, common infected and weapons. Not only that, it seems the weapon functionality can also be edited. So what does this all mean? Well it means mappers can have custom survivors, special/common infected and entirely new weapons unique to just their campaigns (i.e map side modifications, NOT server side)! The L4D modding scene just got a little more interesting boys and girls.

What does this mean to you, the Left 4 Dead 2 PC player? Well, a whole lot more than just Nude Zoeys, I'd bet. Maybe nude jockey-Zoeys hybrids? It's a start.

Dell severs $20 off Left 4 Dead 2 PC price

November 24th, 2009
Yes, Dell, maker of PCs and occasional gaming deals, is now selling the PC version of Left 4 Dead 2 at a drastically reduced price. The company has marked down the game from $49.99 to a mere $29.99. That's twenty whole dollars, which is probably the same price Valve will charge on Steam precisely ten minutes after you buy it from Dell. But hey, it's a deal right now and it's hard to argue with that. Or is it?

[Thanks, Eric!]

Sixteen-Player Co-Op Lets Survivors Outnumber Infected in L4D2 [Whoa]

November 23rd, 2009

Someone has figured out a way to host 16-player co-op in Left 4 Dead 2 on the PC, and as this video shows, it is pure mayhem, with survivors outnumbering infected during some parts of the game.

Plus, I mean, god damn, look how long it takes for everyone to get in the safe room.

Here's another video. I love the beginning, everyone running one after the other to the weapons table. As awesome as this looks, I bet it's pure hell to play. We're seeing the reason Valve capped this at four to a side, I think.

Valve Brings ‘L4D2′ And ‘Team Fortress 2′ To Holiday Greeting Cards

November 23rd, 2009

Valve Holiday Cards

Anyone having trouble deciding on a holiday greeting card to send out to their Xbox Live friend list this season should an easier search thanks to Valve expansion into the stationary market. "Left 4 Dead," "Left 4 Dead 2" and "Team Fortress 2" each have their own set available, featuring artwork by Alexandria Neonakis.

The cards run $15.95 for a pack of 10 with envelopes and are available through The Valve Store.

If Neonakis' name sounds familiar, it's probably because you've seen her home-grown creations in the past, which have included "Katamari Damacy" and "World of Warcraft" cards posted on her website. Valve seems to have recognized her talent and employed her thusly.

Images on the notes range from zombies adorned in Christmas tree lights to snipers dressed like snowmen, but all of them have Neonakis' signature feel of classic illustration with a touch of fannish appreciation. They're pretty much exactly what you'd want to send to any online friends that you primarily associate with over Steam or XBL.

According to the site, pre-orders entered now should ship at the end of November, so move quickly if you want to receive them in time to fill out and distribute for December.

What do you think of Valve's new line of holiday greeting cards? Which games would you like to see get a similar treatment? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Left 4 Dead 2′s Midnight Riders, Ellis Take To YouTube, Facebook [Valve]

November 20th, 2009

Gamers looking for more story in their Left 4 Dead 2 experience may want to refocus their efforts on the web. Ellis, one of the game's new Survivors, and his favorite fictional band, the Midnight Riders have YouTube accounts.

Right now, there's not much to the Midnight Riders' YouTube channel, just like the web site that bears their name. What the Riders do have is a legion of similarly fictional fans, many of whom are infected with the "green flu" but plan on catching the band at Whispering Oaks or the Peach Pit.

One of those fans is Ellis the mechanic. His YouTube account—showing his taste for the Midnight Riders and Swedish country techno band Rednex—is full of Ellis personality. The same for his Facebook page.

Left 4 Dead 2 fans looking to explore the story on a deeper level should befriend and subscribe now.

Sadly, Jimmy Gibbs Jr. Did Not Survive The Zombie Apocalypse [PC]

November 18th, 2009

Those already knee-deep in Left 4 Dead 2's Southern undead will be familiar with Jimmy Gibbs Jr, who is only the greatest stock car racer of all time. Or shall we say, was.

Enterprising modder samm5506 was digging around in Left 4 Dead 2's code the other day when he stumbled upon a zombie model not found within the game itself. Dropping it into a level, he found it was none other than Mr. Jimmy Gibbs Jr. himself, who aside from being a particularly tough zombie, also brings out a few custom one-liners from the survivors, like Nick's "God damn that Jimmy Gibbs Jr.!".

To drop Gibbs into a game (PC version only, naturally), enable the console, then from the main menu enter these commands:

map atrium
sv_cheats 1
z_forcezombiemodelname common_male_jimmy
z_forcezombiemodel 1

Then have at him. The fact he's dead - and trying to bite your face off - makes stealing his car totally OK.

Left 4 Dead 2 clothing is surprisingly unprotective

November 11th, 2009
Honestly, you'd think licensed Left 4 Dead 2 clothing would provide at least some semblance of undead protection. Alas, it looks like the best that Glitch Gaming Apparel could provide is simple T-shirts. Sure, the 100 percent cotton shirts provide ample breathability, but they provide next to zero zombie bite protection. Even worse, they're short-sleeved, leaving hapless survivors with plump, juicy and completely visible arms.

Still, the Ellis and Coach tees at least have a picture of a medical kit on the back, which might be enough to fool a zombie into thinking you're prepared. Let's hope that buys enough time to find yourself a Molotov.

Valve: Left 4 Dead 2 Pre-orders 4 Times The 1st [Valve]

November 5th, 2009

Despite the boycotts, despite the un-Valve-like speedy turn around time, despite complaints that Left 4 Dead 2's cast of Survivors can't possibly live up to the first, pre-orders are four times that of the original, says Valve.

The developer tells CVG that perception about the sequel seems to have changed since the original E3 2009 announcement. "I think people are just excited now," Valve's Chet Faliszek says, citing response to the recently released demo and pre-order numbers.

Oh, indeed, Chet. I may not have coughed up the necessary bills to secure an exclusive American baseball bat or Bill's interdimensional hat, but I'm excited. Where is that UPS man, anyway?

Of course, Left 4 Dead 2 has the benefit of being a known entity, instead of a newly launched intellectual property like the first. We do love our sequels, Valve.

Play Versus Mode In The Left 4 Dead 2 Demo [Left 4 Dead]

November 4th, 2009

The Left 4 Dead 2 demo is now out there for public consumption, but users will have found that the game's signature versus mode has been locked. No problem. Just hack your way around it!

Modder Saul has whipped up a little plugin that allows you to play as the zombies in an online match (PC version only, of course). If you want to host a game, you download the plugin, if you just want to join a game, all you need to do is enter some commands in the console and you're good to go.

$25 Million In Left 4 Dead 2 Ads Gets You At Least Two Trucks [Advertising]

November 3rd, 2009

Valve is earmarking an impressive $25 million in marketing to make sure that everyone with functioning eyes knows that Left 4 Dead 2 is coming this November. That includes at least two putrid trucks, dedicated to promoting the game.

One of those trucks was spotted by Kotaku reader Britt, who not only supplied us with photos and video of the four-wheeled Left 4 Dead 2 billboard, but did some research. Who's ready for some L4D2 fuel efficiency stats?!

"There are two trucks in the Seattle area, one in Downtown Seattle around UW, and one in Bellevue," writes Britt. "They started driving around yesterday, and are on the job for at least 1 month. The trucks are bio-diesel, but still only get about 13 MPG."

But wait, Britt got even more technical detail from driver Henry, who I'm sure is doing a bang up job of obeying speed limits and keeping an eye peeled for pedestrians.

"The trucks can hold a maximum of 10 shots, that cycle at 6 seconds. Though for L4D2, they just have 2 pictures at 10 seconds," Britt says, a fact that can be backed up by windy cell phone video, footage that's about as exciting as using one's scrollbar in the gallery below.
