Realism Vs. mode -- which, as the name implies, is basically the Vs. mode with the realism options on, including non-glowing items, tougher zombies, etc. -- will become permanent after fans voted to keep the mode available. The final tally came out to 68 percent in favor of making the mode permanent, 21 percent against, and 11 percent having no opinion one way or the other. Valve didn't give a date for when the mode will be made permanent, but said they'd have more news next week.
Meanwhile, Valve also announced this week's new Mutation, Follow the Liter. In this iteration of Scavenge mode, only one group of gas cans will spawn at a time, meaning both the Survivors and the Infected know exactly where to go at all times.
Left 4 Dead 2's new "Mutations" system of game variants is just two weeks old, and already one variant is becoming a permanent option. Valve has announced that Realism Vs. mode, the very first Mutation initiated last week, will eventually becoming a permanent option in the game. Additionally, they also revealed the second Mutation for the game: Follow the Liter.

L4D2′s Realism Vs. Mode Becoming Permanent
May 8th, 2010This week's Left 4 Dead 2 Mutation: 'Follow the Liter'
May 7th, 2010
The newest Mutation for Left 4 Dead 2 is "Follow the Liter," a variation on Scavenge mode where only one gas can appears at a time. This severely limits the paths Survivors can take to reach their overall objective and should help to crank up the intensity.
I mean, it's a game about the zombie apocalypse, so it's already fairly intense. Perhaps I should change that to "this Mutation will crank up the ragequitting." While we are on the subject, the next Mutation has been named: it's dubbed "Last Gnome on Earth." Is there any possible way that won't be great?
And finally, the results are in for a poll Valve held that asked if we'd like to see the Realism Versus Mutation become a permanent game type -- 68% of you said yes. No specific date on when this change will be implemented was given, but the Left 4 Dead Blog says to come back next week for an answer.

Guinness World Records Names Top 50 Game Franchises Of All Time
May 7th, 2010
Halo has topped the Guinness World Records’ list of the 50 greatest video game franchises of all time, followed closely by Activision's Call of Duty and Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda. The list was voted on by gamers, so if you have any problems with it (oh, and you will), take it up with yourselves.
"We decided to take a different approach with this list than we did in the previous edition," said in a statement. "Instead of asking developers, industry insiders and journalists to rank their favorite titles, we approached a different kind of expert: the players themselves! We are confident that this 'top 50' more accurately reflects the tastes of the average gamer and not just the critics."
Guinness polled gamers between January and August 2009, and the result can be seen right here:
- Halo
- Call of Duty
- The Legend of Zelda
- Guitar Hero
- Metal Gear
- Super Mario Bros.
- World of Warcraft
- Gears of War
- Super Smash Bros.
- Grand Theft Auto

- Fallout
- Half-Life
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Counter-Strike
- Runescape

- Tomb Raider
- WWE Smackdown Vs. RAW
- Rock Band
- LittleBigPlanet
- Saints Row

Left 4 Dead plushies show the cute and cuddly side of zombies
May 4th, 2010The Valve store kicks off its series of Left 4 Dead plushies with the above lovable boomer. He actually makes sounds from the game when you, I dunno, pull his string or squeeze his tummy or whatever it takes to make a plushie talk these days.
You can see the outlines of the other upcoming plushies at the Valve store. Expect a witch, a hunter, a smoker, and a tank. I'll be holding out for the witch. Although how plushy can a gaunt and dessicated witch be? At least I won't be afraid she'll burst in a shower of vomit if I squeeze her.

‘Wizard Of Oz’ Meets ‘Left 4 Dead’
April 14th, 2010
Can't say this mash-up ever occurred to me, though, in hindsight, it seems sort of obvious. Four people from four different backgrounds trying to conquer a gauntlet to ensure their future survival. Whether they're up against flying monkeys or zombies, the challenge before them is still epic.
The image above was created for the "Character of the Week" contest on Concept Art and was collected by Super Punch in a much more viewable format. Hardly any of the "Oz" re-imaginings are video game related, but they're all extremely impressive and make me upset that the recent SyFy re-imagining was so terrible.
Here's the full shot of the poster, which really sells the "Left 4 Oz" motif.

Left 4 Dead's 'Crash Course' DLC is the Deal of the Week
April 12th, 2010
If you're still playing the original Left 4 Dead on your Xbox 360 -- and believe me, some of us don't blame you -- then know this: the second DLC campaign pack, a two-chapter romp that takes place after the events of "No Mercy," is available at a slightly lower price.
Major Nelson has announced that "Crash Course" is indeed this week's Deal of the Week. Its price, for Xbox LIVE Gold members, is now set at 320 Microsoft Points instead of the usual 560 MSP. Enjoy it (which most of us did but not at this lower price) until this Sunday or something.

Modern Warfare 2 and Mass Effect 2 Characters Infect Left 4 Dead
April 9th, 2010I love my homebuilt rig because the PC always wins when it comes to pure customization. Case in point: the clever folks that leveraged the character models from Mass Effect 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and integrated them into the zombie apocalypse, Left 4 Dead 2. Unfortunately, no one has yet to integrate voice samples in game, but holding back the horde with Ghost or having Tali help you get back on your feet is kinda cool. Instead of installing the mod, why not peek at these videos of the gangs in action, courtesy of our friend Matt Pascual:

Left 4 Dead 2 'The Passing' DLC Gets Delayed, Priced for Xbox 360
March 29th, 2010The Passing will cost 560 Microsoft Points ($7) on Xbox 360--the same price as the Left 4 Dead 'Crash Course' DLC--Valve apparently told the show, while we presume that, in true Valve style, PC users will once again receive the update for free.

Here's the new stuff you get in L4D2: The Passing
March 24th, 2010
Valve has revealed a few scant details for Left 4 Dead 2's Spring DLC, The Passing. As well as revealing new weaponry, a new special infected, and confirming the death of an original Survivor, multiple fresh game modes have been teases. As in, more than one.
Here's everything promised so far for The Passing:
- The Witch Bride
- A M60 weapon
- A golf club melee weapon
- The "Fallen" Survivor
- New Game Modes
Sounds like a damn weighty package to me. As usual, I'm sure PC gamers will get to enjoy this for free while Microsoft will expect Xbox 360 consumers to pay for it. In any case, who is interested in picking this up? My Left 4 Dead 2 gaming has died off a little bit recently due to time constraints, but I'm sure this will drag me back into the game.
