Valve Announces “The Sacrifice” DLC for Left 4 Dead 1 and 2

August 21st, 2010

Left 4 Dead

If you'll recall, when Valve released "The Passing" for Left 4 Dead 2 -- a downloadable add-on that brought back the survivors from the first Left 4 Dead...except for one who died at some point prior -- their plan was to eventually release a companion DLC showing the events that took the life of said survivor. Well now here it is: Valve has announced "The Sacrifice," a new DLC campaign that will be available for both the original Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 as well.

Announced on GameTrailers TV, The Sacrifice will indeed show the events that L4D1's group went through before meeting up with L4D2's group in The Passing. And, yes, it will show how a certain survivor ultimately met their end.

But beyond that, while there is a certain canonical version of which character is supposed to die (a story that will also be told in a four-part digital comic that Valve intends to release before The Sacrifice), gamers will also be allowed to play out their own version of the events and choose which character they think should die in the end. And on top of the main new content, The Sacrifice will also add L4D1's "No Mercy" campaign into L4D2 as well.

Left 4 Dead 2 mutates again, DLC teased

August 13th, 2010
Thanks to Left 4 Dead 2, Friday has become some kind of weekly masochistic holiday. This week proves no different, as the latest mutation, Iron Man, pits the survivors against the Infected with "no respawns, no restarts, no ammo, all tension." In other words, you get the ammo you start with, no one respawns and, should your whole crew bite the dust (or be bitten by dusty zombies), you'll have to start the entire campaign over again. Ouch.

In other news, the Left 4 Dead Blog also dropped some hints about upcoming DLC. Those who finished "The Passing" DLC will know that someone from the original Left 4 Dead heads off for the great Safe House in the sky (don't hit the source link if you'd like this to remain unspoiled). According to the blog, a forthcoming comic and DLC will explain exactly how the survivor kicked the bucket. We're no psychics, but we're guessing it was zombies.

Left 4 Dead’s ‘Tank’ figure unveiled, busting through bank accounts

July 31st, 2010
We've got some mixed emotions about the just revealed Tank mini-statue (statuette just doesn't seem fitting for a giant terrifying zombie), created by Gaming Heads for Valve. Sure, its detail is marvelous and it comes with a totally sweet, albeit miniature, pump-action shotgun, but it's also 325 real-life actual dollars for the "exclusive edition".

At 15 inches tall, you'd better have a real special place in your heart (and in your house, preferably a cage) to shell out that kind of cash. If you'd like to save yourself a bit of money, there's a less-exclusive version (limited to a run of 750) for $300, but unfortunately it comes with no mini pump-action shotgun. And frankly, we both know that's completely unacceptable. How else will you fight off the little monster when he goes after your throat? Hmmm? Interested parties will be glad to know that orders appear to be open as of right now, though the statue won't be set free until "Q1 2011."

Valve apologizes for banning over 12,000 legit Modern Warfare 2 players

July 27th, 2010
The anti-cheating software embedded in Valve's Steamworks platform recently took on a mind of its own, banning over 12,000 non-cheating Modern Warfare 2 players over the past two weeks. The cause for its insatiable ban lust? Valve president Gabe Newell explained in an email to those affected, "the problem was that Steam would fail a signature check between the disk version of a DLL and a latent memory version." See, we were just thinking that that had something to do with it.

Newell begged pardon for the erroneous bans, adding "this was our mistake, and I apologize for any frustration or angst it may have caused you." An apology and a swift reversal of the ban aren't all that these users will receive -- Newell promised a giftable copy of Left 4 Dead 2 to all those affected, as well as one copy for themselves, provided they don't already have it.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Valve Compensates 12,000 Banned Gamers With Left 4 Dead 2 Copies

Modern Warfare 2 Resurgence Map Pack Screens Go Oscar Mike

Proving once again why they are as beloved by gamers as they are, Valve Software have not only unbanned 12,000 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 players on Steam, but they’ve also given them something for the hassle: two free copies of Left 4 Dead 2.

As GamesIndustry.biz reports, a bug in Steam cropped up recently that tricked the system’s anti-cheating measures into thinking non-cheating players were in fact big, stinking cheaters. This error resulted in a slew of bans that Valve, at first, said they weren’t responsible for. However, after doing some digging, Valve realized it was in fact an error on their end.

This prompted Valve head Gabe Newell to send out a personal message to all afflicted players that admitted, “This was our mistake, and I apologize for any frustration or angst it may have caused you.” To smooth things over even more, Newell also informed players, “We have given you a free copy of Left 4 Dead 2 to give as a gift on Steam, plus a free copy for yourself if you didn’t already own the game.”

Valve: Always keeping it classy.

Get a new perspective on Valve's excellent Alien Swarm

July 26th, 2010

PC Gamer has posted some rather obvious information about how to use the console to switch Alien Swarm from an overhead view to a first person view. But more importantly, they've discovered that it still plays well, and they've even posted the above video. The only thing missing is a roof!

Pretty nifty, but I'm attached to being able to see what's behind me. You can't always trust the other three players to watch your back. In fact, I think I'd rather play Left 4 Dead from an overhead perspective. What's the console command for that?

New L4D2 Mutation: Hard Eight (more like ‘Just Hard’)

July 17th, 2010
At first, we really liked the idea of Left 4 Dead 2 "mutations." They promised fun tweaks to the gameplay to keep it interesting and fresh. In practice, however, they seem more like an excuse for Valve to make the game even harder. For instance, this week's mutation is "Hard Eight," which doubles the maximum number of active special Infected from four to eight. Eight.

What's that? You just killed a Boomer? Well, don't worry, because there are seven more standing right behind you.

Left 4 Dead 2′s latest mutation is nothing but swords

July 10th, 2010
The official Left 4 Dead 2 blog has posted the latest mutation to Valve's great zombie apocalypse simulation and it's ... swords. All swords, all the time. Hacking, slashing, slicing, dicing, piercing, thrusting -- you name it, you'll be doing it against the undead horde.

The post also has the results of the poll about players' favorite level finale, and Dark Carnival's Midnight Riders concert takes the win on Xbox 360, with The Parish's bridge traversal tying it for PC players. The worst? Unanimously, Hard Rain's boat wait is the pick (and we'd have to agree). Finally, the blog teases next week's mutation with the words "Hard Eight." That could only mean one thing: Get ready to star in an underrated Paul Thomas Anderson movie!

I am legend: Left 4 Dead 2's 'Last Man on Earth' mutation

May 28th, 2010

I am legend: Left 4 Dead 2's 'Last Man on Earth' mutation screenshot

No co-op teammates, no AI bots, and no Common Infected. Just you as the only Survivor left racing toward the safehouse before Special Infected get a chance to jump you.

This is the newest weekly mutation for Left 4 Dead 2, "Last Man on Earth." It sounds -- more than any other game mode before it -- super risky, which is exactly what Valve should be aiming for. In my mind, it can play out one of two ways: it's either going to be painfully frustrating or tense beyond all belief.

No matter how "Last Man on Earth" goes over with the fans, it absolutely seems worth trying out at least once. Getting the community back into the game seems to be the driving force behind these mutations; mission success?
